IMechE submits conclusions of Nanotechnology Experts' Meeting to DTI

July 21, 2005

The IMechE's Nanotechnology Experts' Meeting ran from December 10-11, 2004, at the Grovefield House Hotel, Burnham in Buckinghamshire and was attended by 30 of the world's leading experts on Nanotechnology. In this truly international field there were representatives from the UK, US, Bulgaria, Japan, Germany, Turkey and Singapore sharing information on the technology taking place in their countries and their ideas for the future.

There were keynote presentations on Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies in FP6 (and FP7) by Dr. Gerd Bachmann, Consultant, VDI Technologiezentrum and Global Nanomarkets by Professor Hugh Clare, Network Director, MNT.

The following major topics were discussed:

  • Nanodevises: Mechanics and Machines
  • Nanofabrication: Design and Manufacturing
  • Nanomaterials: Coatings and Molecular Engineering
  • Nanofundamentals: Engineering Science at the Small Scale
  • Global Nanomarkets and Recommendations for Future Action

All the experts, without exception, regarded the meeting as a success and agreed that the recognition of the subject area, the open discussion, networking and recommendations has strengthened interdisciplinary interactions and has enabled progress towards a common view. The quality of the discussion is reflected in the fact that the IMechE and the DTI has produced a report detailing our conclusions.
