SUNY Poly Celebrates Its 10th Year Exhibiting at SEMICON West with Cutting Edge Developments in Integrated Photonics and Power Electronics

SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly), in partnership with Empire State Development, today announced that a team of the institution’s leading researchers, complemented by scientists from a number of SUNY Poly’s corporate partners, will play a significant role in the globally recognized SEMICON West 2016 conference taking place in San Francisco, California. With its attendance, SUNY Poly will mark its 10th year exhibiting at SEMICON West by showcasing its world-class capabilities and unparalleled innovation-based photonics, semiconductor, and photovoltaic-focused know-how to an industry-centric global audience.

During this year’s engagement, SUNY Poly will present progress reports for a number of initiatives that it is spearheading in New York State, including updates on the American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics), which will showcase a state-of-the-art 300mm silicon photonics wafer, and the New York Power Electronics Manufacturing Consortium (NY-PEMC), as well as a panel discussion regarding the integration of solar technologies into the internet of things (IoT) at the concurrently held Intersolar North America exhibition and conference.

At this year’s SEMICON West conference, SUNY Poly presenters, including SUNY Poly Executive Vice President of Innovation and Technology, Vice President of Research and CEO of AIM Photonics Dr. Michael Liehr and SUNY Poly Associate Vice President for Business, Wafer Processing and CMO of AIM Photonics Frank Tolic will provide updates on the SUNY Poly-led AIM Photonics initiative, headquartered in Rochester, NY, as it ramps up research and development capabilities and begins to build and equip the Rochester-based photonics packaging, test, and assembly facility. AIM Photonics has seen incredible interest in membership, with more than 30 signed members and additional interested parties from 27 different U.S. states, including partners from industry, academia, and government. SUNY Poly technology research and development leaders will provide presentations on topics such as “Packaging Photonics for Speed and Bandwith” and “AIM Photonics Solutions to CMP Challenges with Integrated Si Photonics Chips.” They will also discuss related AIM Academy and workforce development efforts that are currently underway to ensure that AIM Photonics-related jobs are filled by a pool of diverse, highly qualified candidates.

“New York State’s high-tech corridor, led by SUNY Poly, is catalyzing a next-generation technology research, development, and commercialization ecosystem that will continue to shape the 21st Century and offer incredible opportunities for many who are attending the SEMICON West conference from around the world,” said Dr. Liehr. “At SEMICON West, SUNY Poly is excited to share a number of updates related to the AIM Photonics initiative with scientists and business leaders as we aim to foster the partnerships that will light the way toward an even brighter future of technological advancement and business growth in New York State.”

During the SEMICON West engagement, the NY-PEMC will also be highlighted by SUNY Poly, which, along with General Electric, is leading the strategic development and growth of the consortium to enable the high volume manufacturing and packaging of power electronic devices and systems that are smaller, faster, and more efficient. More specifically, a presentation by SUNY Poly Vice President for Manufacturing Innovation and General Manager of the NY-PEMC Paul Farrar will detail the status of the initiative and its progress to date, including information about the world-class Silicon Carbide (SiC) wafer fab which is located at SUNY Poly’s $24 billion Albany NanoTech Complex and a state-of-the-art SiC packaging facility at SUNY Poly’s Computer Chip Commercialization Center (Quad-C) fab, located in Utica, New York. Farrar will also share findings on SiC-based devices and applications for the advanced technology. Presenters from partner corporations will update attendees on capabilities related to wafer capacity per year, in addition to new metrology and analytical methods. The NY-PEMC will also showcase a number of cutting-edge power electronics-focused items at SUNY Poly’s SEMICON West Tech Pavilion exhibition booth, many of which are being supplied by GE, including a sample packaged SiC module, a 4” SiC metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) wafer, and a 6” Si demonstration wafer with MOSFET patterning, among others.

Complementing the various presentations by SUNY Poly researchers and partners, the more than 26,000 expected attendees of the SEMICON West conference and exhibition will be able to learn about the institution’s world-class resources and exciting partnership opportunities by visiting SUNY Poly’s 800 square foot Tech Pavilion, which will feature representatives from SUNY Poly, Empire State Development, NY Loves Nanotech, AIM Photonics, and NY-PEMC who will provide information regarding New York State’s rapidly expanding high-tech corridor and its business incentives, such as the tax-free Start-Up NY initiative. Visitors to the SUNY Poly booth at SEMICON West will not only be able to gain insight into the NY-PEMC and view a number of Silicon Carbide-centered display items, but they will also be able to learn more about AIM Photonics and view a cutting-edge 300mm silicon photonics wafer. In addition, attendees will be able to obtain information about SUNY Poly’s workforce development efforts focused on subsystems and site services for PV, mixed signal sensors, and LED advanced manufacturing, for example. Booth number 6378 will be located in the Moscone Center’s North Hall near the TechXPOT North Advance Packaging Forum, and representatives will be available Tuesday, July 12 through Wednesday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursday, July 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Additionally, SUNY Poly will play an integral role in the Intersolar North America conference, which is being held in San Francisco alongside SEMICON West 2016. A panel discussion, “How the Convergence of Energy, Data Analytics, and IoT will Change the Solar Market,” will take place on Monday, July 11 led by moderator Dr. Pradeep Haldar, SUNY Poly Vice President of Entrepreneurship Innovation and Clean Energy Programs; Director of the SUNY Poly Energy and Environmental Technology Applications Center (E2TAC); Executive Director of New Energy New York (NENY); and Chief Operating and Technology Officer of the U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (U.S. PVMC). Panelists include representatives from Gehrlicher Solar, REC Solar, IBM, Nest, and the Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative who will discuss how the solar industry can utilize an advanced digital strategy to improve solar system costs and efficiency while looking to seamlessly integrate solar technologies into the evolving IoT.

Intersolar North America, co-located with SEMICON West, takes place each year and features an exhibition and conference attended by nearly 20,000 visitors. The event focuses on research, development, commercialization, and deployment of photovoltaics; PV production technologies; energy storage; and solar thermal technologies. SEMICON West is the annual tradeshow for the microelectronics manufacturing industries and their supply chains where leaders present research and other sector-shaping progress reports via keynote addresses, executive panels, and technical and business sessions to attendees from around the world. In addition to the more than 700 expected exhibitors and hundreds of product displays, the event also features applications and topics ranging from micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) to nanoelectronics and the IoT. The conference runs from July 12 through July 14.
