Abstract:
The amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere has been rising over the last 150 years. This has gradually resulted in an inability of the natural scrubbers of CO2, such as the oceans, forests and other biomass, to keep pace with production. Human activities, most notably the burning of fossil fuels, has increased CO2 emissions while land clearing has reduced the natural scrubbers.

Transform CO2 Emissions into Money

One approach to the challenge of increasing CO2 levels is carbon capture and storage. Carbon capture and storage or geological sequestration is the process of capturing carbon dioxide from industrial sources before it is released to the atmosphere, transporting it to subterranean sites such as oil and gas reservoirs or deep geological formations and storing it there. In essence, burying the problem rather than dealing with it!

In order to truly meet the challenge, a cost effective and efficient technology is needed.

Meeting the Challenge
Products have been developed and tested the Carbon Catcher both in research and industrial settings. Through the use of di-electrophoresis and electrophoresis under pressure and in the presence of heat, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide can be separated into ionic carbon and ionic oxygen. The basis of the technology is the patented thermo-dielectric-electric-dynamic (TDEED) field. Using TDEED, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide (and nitrogen oxides) can be removed from treated flue gases at a rate suitable for industrial applications.

Using their patented technology, the Product Supplier provides the solution for cleaning stack emissions, while generating revenue from carbon offsets and returning carbon to the fuel cycle, all for 10% of the energy produced.

The Results
Results from small scale test models of the Carbon Catcher showed that carbon dioxide levels were lower in the exhaust than in the test chamber, oxygen was produced, particulate carbon was produced and carbon monoxide levels in the chamber decreased as the temperature and pressure increased.

On an industrial scale, large vessels are used. These vessels are about 14-18 feet across and 15 feet high contain multiples of 7 tubes and 14 elements and include about 1.4 m3 of oxide membrane. The carbon is collected in the vessels and removed by a carbon blow down system and the oxide is removed by passing through the membrane. Installations can be sized according to need by adding vessels. At present, medium and large scale installations have been designed for industrial sites.

Modelling has shown that a medium scale installation having 1-2 vessels, and being suitable for 2 MW power plants will produce up to 2 tonnes of solid carbon and 831 m3 oxide gas per hour - a large installation having 16-24 vessels and being suitable for 100 MW power plants will produce up to about 100 tonnes of solid carbon and 41,580 m3 oxide gas per hour. The oxide gas can be green looped for scrubbing the upstream flue gas and clean CO2 can be used to supply the dry ice green loop for removing stack heat and separating CO2.

The Conclusions
The results provide compelling evidence that the Carbon Catcher is a very cost effective and efficient approach for collecting solid carbon from smoke stack emissions. The approach provides a revenue stream from carbon offsets, and provides useable carbon, while using as little as 10% of the energy produced.
