Home > Nanotechnology Columns > Piedmont Triad Partnership > Triad innovator's successful Ohio Buckypaper Initiative Announces Aggressive Pricing
Abstract: May 29th, 2010
A year after founding, Buckeye Composites (Dayton, OH, USA), a division of NanoTechLabs Inc., of Yadkinville, NCannounced on May 28th that it has reduced the price of its buckypaper product, BuckyShield™, to approximately $75/sq. ft.
Buckypaper contains carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or other carbon nanomaterial in a membrane or paper-like format and is the core technology of Buckeye. The ability to integrate CNTs into composite structures with buckypaper allows manufacturers to access the performance properties of CNTs using existing production processes. "One of the benefits of our buckypaper process is its versatility," said Ravine. "We can use a variety of carbon nanomaterials including CNTs, carbon nanofibers [CNFs], and nanoscale graphene platelets. We can also incorporate binders during the paper-making process or as a post-production step through collaboration with prepregging industry." Buckeye Composites targets electrical property enhancements of composites for aerospace applications while reducing the weight and manufacturing costs relative to existing metallic solutions. Buckeye Composites produces the buckypaper in continuous rolls 12 inches wide by up to 345 linear feet with tailorable areal weight and thickness; standard products range from 20 gsm to 60 gsm and offer surface electrical resistivities as low as 0.5 ohms per square. "The price of $75/ sq. ft. represents a significant price reduction from several hundreds of dollars per square foot only a year ago," stated Ravine.
About NanoTechLabs: NanoTechLabs Inc. (NTL) (Yadkinville, NC, USA), Buckeye Composites' parent company, produces multi-walled (MWNTS), double walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTS) and other specialty nanomaterials such as boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTS). NTL's materials are incorporated into polymer matrices for the electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI) market. NTL has experience in blending nanomaterials into a broad range of polymers such as epoxies, thermosets, thermoplastics, and elastomers.
