Abstract:
Iranian researchers from Sahand University of Technology in Tabriz produced polymer samples with higher impact resistance thanks to the presence of nanoparticles in their structure.

Increasing Impact Resistance of Polypropylene by Nanoparticles

Tehran, Iran | Posted on November 20th, 2015

Results of the research can be used in various industries such as automobile manufacturing, medical industry and electronics after mass-production.

Being fragile under impact loads is the most important weakness in polypropylene. This polymer breaks at room temperature or lower temperatures under impact loads in a brittle manner. The main objective of the research was to modify and to improve the mechanical properties of polypropylene.

A rubber phase was used in this research as well as calcium carbonate nanoparticles to simultaneously modify impact resistance and hardness in propylene matrix.

Results obtained from preliminary studies show that impact resistance can be increased in propylene by applying appropriate process conditions during the production and by adding calcium carbonate nanoparticles. In addition, this method prevents reduction in other desirable and engineered properties of polypropylene.

The simultaneous use of rubber phase and calcium carbonate nanometric filler increases impact resistance in polypropylene up to five times in comparison with the pure samples. The modification in impact resistance may remove the limitations in the applications of polypropylene, and as a result, the application of this polymer becomes more extended.

In case this product is produced at large scale, the modified product can be used in various industries such as automobile manufacturing, medical industry, home appliance and tools as well as electrical and electronic devices.

Results of the research have been published in Polymer Bulletin, vol. 72, issue 11, 2015, pp. 2757-2782.
