Abstract:
Iranian researchers produced and studied laboratorial samples of nanofibers that have application in the treatment of wound and infection thanks to their antibacterial properties and ability to prevent the extension of infection.
Nowadays, strenuous efforts are being made to produce new drugs for the replacement of the usual antibiotics due to the resistance of bacteria that cause hospital and burn infections against the usual antibiotics. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the pathogens and is the most important reason for surface and aggressive infections on the skin. The resistance of this bacterium is increasing rapidly against antibiotics in comparison with other bacteria.
Nanofibers have been used in this research as drug carrier bandages. The researchers believe that the process to produce nanofibers is easier and more cost-effective than the production of normal bandages. Therefore, nanofibers can be considered as an appropriate replacement to reduce costs in productive industries.
Bacteriocin antiseptic drug has been produced in this research by using lactobacillus, and it has been stabilized on the produced nanofibers at the same time with the beginning of electrospinning process. Bacteria rapidly become resistant to antibiotics. Therefore, the use of bacteriocins can be considered as a good replacement for the antibiotics, or it can reduce the risk of antibacterial resistance by being added to antibiotics.
Based on the experimental results, the release of bacteriocin from nanofibers and its antibacterial activity significantly reduce the number of bacteria. Therefore, the samples are able to treat infectious wounds.
This project was carried out by Taavongaran Shomal Technical and Engineering Cooperative in the form of a thesis required by industry with the financial support of Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC).
