Abstract:
Iranian researchers from Material and Energy Research Center studied the effects of nanoparticles on mechanical and thermal properties of ceramics used in thermal insulators.
This research also studied the effect of the number of layers and presents a mathematical model to predict their behaviors.
Alumina has very appropriate chemical and physical properties, but its resistance to fracture is weak. Zirconia nanoparticles stabilized with yttria are used to solve this problem. On the other hand, functionally graded materials have better properties than single layer materials at similar loading conditions. In this research, functionally graded nanocomposites have been made of alumina and various molar concentrations of stabilized yttria. The aim of the research was to study the sintering behavior and mechanical properties of functionally graded pieces with different chemical composition.
Results of the research have application in the field of advanced materials, specially the under-tension thermal insulators. In addition, the results of the research can be used in the production of biocompatible dental and bone implants.
This research studied the microstructure, physical and thermal properties during sintering and mechanical properties of the functionally graded pieces. Sintering behavior of functionally graded pieces has been simulated with mathematical model for the first time. The cost of designing composite pieces made of alumina-zirconia nanomaterials or even other similar ceramic materials can be easily reduced by using the simulation on thermal behavior and by determining thermal strain tensor.
Results of the research have been published in Ceramics International, vol. 40, issue 2, 2014, pp. 2717-2722.
