Abstract:
Discovery, Canada's leading innovation conference and trade show, is pleased to announce the participation of Singularity University (SU) in this year's show.

Ontario Centres of Excellence's Discovery Welcomes Singularity University

Toronto, Canada | Posted on April 3rd, 2014

Founded in 2008 and located on the NASA Research Park in Silicon Valley, Singularity is world-renowned for educating, inspiring and empowering leaders to apply disruptive exponential technologies to address humanity's grand challenges. More than 1,500 leaders from 85 countries have attended their programs.

Discovery is proud to present SU faculty Brad Templeton, Networks and Computing Chair, and Salim Ismail, Global Ambassador and Founding Executive Director, who will share their thoughts on exponential technologies, their intersections and impact on economies worldwide with Discovery attendees during the show opening on May 12.

They will then present on such areas as computation, artificial intelligence and robotics, 3D printing, biotech, nanomaterials, energy and more during two sessions from 4 to 6 p.m. Both are graduates of the University of Waterloo.

This is a rare chance to learn from Singularity University faculty, who advise and educate senior business leaders and governments worldwide, without leaving Ontario.

"Discovery is Canada's premier innovation showcase and Singularity University is the gold standard when it comes to inspiring innovative big thinking," said Dr. Tom Corr, OCE's president and CEO. "The insights and knowledge that Singularity brings are a perfect fit for Discovery and with Ontario's goal to be a world leader in knowledge sharing, research and innovation. I also want to thank Deloitte for their support in this special presentation."

Singularity's participation at this year's Discovery builds on the themes of accelerating and disruptive technologies as presented by last year's keynote speaker, SU co-founder Peter Diamandis.

"In 10 years, it is predicted that 40 percent of the Fortune 500 companies will no longer exist," explains Executive Chairman Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, who co-founded SU with Futurist Ray Kurzweil, Director of Engineering at Google heading up a team developing machine intelligence and natural language understanding. "We started Singularity University because there was no where I or any entrepreneur could go to learn about the impact and opportunities of exponential technologies. AI and robotics, synthetic biology and bioinformatics, nanotechnology, 3D printing - all are disrupting traditional industries and changing the way we think about how we do business and the speed in which we make decisions and bring resources to market."

"When we consider the future of Canada, knowledge of both the grand opportunities and threats presented by exponential tools and technologies is crucial," says Terry Stuart, Chief Innovation Officer at Deloitte Canada.

Named Canada's Best Trade Show 2010 and 2011 and now in its ninth year, OCE's Discovery is Canada's premier innovation showcase. It brings together the best and brightest minds in industry, academia, investment and government to showcase leading-edge technologies, best practices and research in the areas of energy, the environment, advanced health, digital media, information and communication technologies and advanced manufacturing. The annual conference and showcase attracts more than 2,500 attendees and 350 exhibitors.
