Abstract:
Alf Månsson and Sven Tågerud, professors at Linnaeus University in Sweden, have been granted a patent in the US for their research on nanodiagnostics. Their ideas will, among other things, improve diagnosing for prostate cancer.

Cancer research: New US patent to Swedish researchers

Stockholm, Sweden | Posted on January 30th, 2014

The ideas that have been patented deal with improved ways of detecting illness signals in blood samples. Through their research they have come up with a way of detecting very low levels of illness-related substances, such as, for instance, prostate-specific antigen, something that is important when a follow-up is carried out after surgery. Another possibility that comes with the idea is the ability to detect multiple markers simultaneously. As a result, diagnostics for, for instance, prostate cancer can be improved.

The patent has been given the name "Detection conjugate" and will be printed and published in the US sometime during the first months of 2014. The patent adds to an earlier Swedish patent.

- This is a major step towards the commercialisation of our ideas concerning diagnostics and, generally speaking, an important recognition", says Alf Månsson. "In addition, since we handed in our Swedish patent application, we have published a number of scientific articles which have shown that our ideas can be put into practice, for instance in J Nanobiotechnology and Nano Letters.

About Expertsvar
Expertanswer (Expertsvar in Swedish) was launched in 2000 to act as a bridge between journalists and Swedish experts and researchers.

Expertanswer is the fastest way for journalists to get in touch with the original source within the Swedish research community. Writers can get the researcher's contact details within their timeframe and make it to the deadlines. They can also pick a selection of press releases according to their interests.

This media service was created by the KK-foundation and Swedish universities, and it is run by the Swedish Research Council in collaboration with other member institutions.

It also offers an enquiry service to channel daily questions from journalists looking for the right expert to interview. Press and information officers from all Swedish universities and most university colleges, research institutes and councils are ready on stand-by to answer these questions.

To date, Expertanswer has over 6 000 Swedish and international journalists listed and have published over 12 000 news releases on Swedish research.
