The state of nanotechnology for targeted treatment delivery

Abstract:
Dr. Arto Urtti from the University of Helsinki discussed nanotechnology for drug delivery. Nanotechnology deals with particles in the 20-50nm size range. Namomedicine types include self-assembling, processed particles, single molecule carriers and hybrid systems. Nanoparticle design factors include particle size, surface properties and disintegration. The size must be small enough to enter the tumor cells and usually it must be smaller than 200nm. The surface must be modified to avoid plasma protein binding and immune recognition. Disintegration means that the particle bound drug must be released so that the drug is activated.
