Pitt scientist to lead quantum quest
Abstract:
Jeremy Levy's work could help destroy our ability to encrypt information on the Internet, and it could help transfer electricity without burning energy. Or it could lead to nothing.
The Department of Defense awarded $7.5 million to Levy and a national team of scientists he's leading to help create quantum computers, something that may be impossible, Levy acknowledged when the University of Pittsburgh announced the grant yesterday.
If scientists can use quantum mechanics to build fully functional quantum computers, their super speed could help solve some near-impossible mathematical problems and make some impossibilities possible.
One thing a quantum computer could do is break every encryption code on the Internet. No one could send a private e-mail, and the government couldn't protect secret military information, Levy said. The government is trying to protect itself by pioneering the science before others do.
