Nanogate considerably expands its plastics expertise with a new product line for high-performance hygienic surfaces

Göttelborn, Germany | Posted on June 16th, 2010

Nanogate (ISIN DE000A0JKHC9), a leading international nanotechnology enabler, is considerably boosting its strategy in the field of multifunctional, high-performance surfaces with its equity holding in sarastro GmbH. Nanogate's expertise in coating various plastic surfaces and sarastro's specialism in producing antimicrobial systems complement one another ideally. Following several pilot applications in the sanitary and health sector, the first joint product - PermaResist© Hygienic - is now going into serial production. There is considerable market potential for the two partners' products thanks to their numerous areas of application, greatly improved hygienic properties and additional combinable functionalities.

As hygiene requirements grow, greater demands are being placed on the products and materials employed. This is particularly true of products which are used on a daily basis, in public spaces or in the health sector. Together with a number of well-known cooperation partners, sarastro has already gained important experience in the field of hygienic surfaces. As part of their cooperation, Nanogate and sarastro are now utilising this expertise for joint products and applications relating to plastic coatings and developing efficient solutions for multifunctional, high-performance hygienic surfaces.

The plastic coatings' multifunctionality - and therefore their strength - is derived from both their wide-ranging properties and their versatility, as they can be applied to almost all conventional plastics. Surfaces enhanced with PermaResist© Hygienic have a defined antimicrobial effect which significantly reduces germs, fungi and bacteria reliably and permanently. Optional properties can also be added, making the surface scratchproof and easier to clean, for example.

Almost all standard types of plastic - such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polycarbonate and polystyrene - can be coated with the PermaResist© line. A wide range of applications can be catered for, such as cases for consumer electronics, automotive components, industrial componentry or medical-technical devices. The application process is simple and can be integrated into standard coating practices. This makes it cost-efficient and economical, enabling optimum value creation.

"Following successful initial pilot applications in the strictly regulated and monitored health sector, Nanogate and sarastro have established a very successful competitive position. In doing so, we have opened up considerable market potential," said Ralf Zastrau, CEO of Nanogate AG. "These developments show that the equity holding in sarastro was an important strategic step and we took it at precisely the right time. The collaboration gives us the ideal addition to our expertise in coating high-performance surfaces, allowing us to explore new, promising application areas and markets."

About Nanogate AG
Nanogate is a leading international enabler in the nanotechnology growth market and so opens the gate to this technology for its customers. The firm, which is based in Göttelborn (Saarland), enables the programming and integration of additional properties – such as non-stick, anti-bacterial, anti-corrosive and ultra-low friction – into materials and surfaces. Nanogate thereby gains a competitive edge for its customers by product refinement using chemical nanotechnology. Nanogate covers a wide range of industries, functions and substrates on the basis of technology platforms. The company thus provides a decisive interface for the commercial use of chemical nanotechnology and bridges the gap between the suppliers of raw materials and industrial conversion into products. In doing so, Nanogate concentrates as an enabler on one of the most attractive segments in the industry. As a partner in innovation, Nanogate provides many services along the value chain – from development and production of innovative nanocomposities and nanostructured materials to powerful support for innovation and product integration.

The Nanogate Group currently has 82 employees in all (as of April 2010) and since commencing operations in 1999 has been a trailblazer in nanotechnology. The company has first-class customer references (e.g. ABB, BSH Bosch-Siemens Haushaltsgeräte, Kärcher, Koenig & Bauer AG, Opel and REWE Austria) and many years’ experience of different industries and applications. To date, more than 180 projects have gone into mass production. Nanogate has also entered into strategic cooperations with international companies such as the GEA Group and Dow Corning. The Group also includes Nanogate Advanced Materials GmbH, which specialises in complex applications like high-performance optics, FNP GmbH in the area of sport/leisure, a majority shareholding in Holmenkol AG and a shareholding in sarastro GmbH.

sarastro GmbH
The nanotech company sarastro GmbH specialises in developing and marketing biologically active functional surface finishes. Established in 2001, sarastro offers innovative solutions based on chemical nanotechnology for applications from the fields of medicine, medical technology, life science, hygiene, cosmetics and food. The company’s customers include Wincor-Nixdorf and Siemens. The firm currently has twelve employees, most of whom are scientists (chemists, biologists and doctors).

The company’s own chemical and biological laboratories are crucial to successfully developing and marketing new solutions. They enable sarastro to check that newly developed materials comply both with standard technical requirements and with biological and medical compatibility specifications. Quality-controlled production is guaranteed by a quality management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 13485:2007 and Annex V 93/42/EEC. As well as guaranteeing top-quality development, sarastro thus ensures that newly developed materials are produced to the high standard expected in the industry.
