Nanotechnology Would Help to Treat Leishmaniasis

Abstract:
A medicine used to deal with gastric ulcers, and adapted through the use of nanotechnology, has been shown to be effective in combating leishmaniasis, a "forgotten" disease that is transmitted by the bite of a sand fly, and affects up to 500,000 people per year in the world. According to André Tempone, of the Laboratory of Applied Toxicology and Anti-parasite Drugs of the Institute Adolph Lutz, Brazil, and coordinator of the study, "[I]n untreated cases, the rate of mortality is almost 100 percent."
