Should nanomaterials be regulated?

Abstract:
Nanomaterials are being used these days in a wide variety of consumer items, from cosmetics to flat-screen TVs to baseball bats.

Such materials are designed to make products stronger, more flexible and more reliable. But no one really knows if some of the materials might eventually prove harmful to human health or the environment.

"The law lags science. You are years ahead of us," Ralph Hall, a law professor at the University of Minnesota, on Monday told an audience made up mostly of scientists. It was the first day of a national conference at the University of Notre Dame on the topic of whether nanomaterials should be regulated to avoid potential harm to human health and the environment.
