Science group says 'immune booster' for space travel not so far off

Abstract:
During the contest, students were introduced to a patented nanotechnology product already invented by a NASA scientist. The students then needed to identify a problem and create a marketable use for the patent, which allows pharmaceuticals to be delivered in microgravity.

The students' research found that in the zero-gravity world of space, the human immune system shuts down and can take months to return to a normal state. Team members said the patent would be valuable if space travel becomes more prevalent in the future because a total immune system shutdown could pose a barrier to would-be space travelers.
