Abstract:
The National University of Singapore (NUS) and the University of Cambridge announced plans to further deepen the extensive academic and institutional links between the two universities with the launch of an NUS-Cambridge Scholarship. The scholarship will support up to one Singaporean scholar each year to pursue PhD studies in Cambridge. Through these scholars, NUS and Cambridge will strengthen existing areas of research and educational partnership and develop new areas of collaboration.

The NUS-Cambridge Scholarship is part of the NUS Overseas Graduate Scholarship (OGS) scheme, the University's local talent development programme introduced in 1981. The OGS is targetted at attracting highly promising Singaporeans with the potential to join NUS as Assistant Professors, and prepares them for this role by supporting their doctoral studies in top institutions overseas. The overseas training also serves to bring new perspectives and connections to NUS, when the scholars return and are selected as junior faculty in NUS.

While these occur at an institutional level, it is really the faculty-to-faculty interactions which produce the most exciting and productive programmes and outcomes. The NUS-Cambridge Scholarship will further enhance these people-centred relationships and connections between our two universities. I believe that over time, this will help us to build the types of research and educational collaborations that will have a significant impact, not just for our students and universities, but for society at large."

Strong Academic Links between NUS and Cambridge

NUS and Cambridge have an existing joint appointment scheme launched in 2007. Under this initiative, talented faculty members would hold joint faculty appointments and spend substantial time in both universities working closely with faculty members on research of common interest. Faculties from NUS and Cambridge participating in this scheme include NUS' Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, School of Computing, Faculty of Dentistry, NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering and Institute for Mathematical Sciences; and Cambridge's School of Clinical Medicine, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences and Technology.

Research collaborations between the two universities have been extensive, covering a broad spectrum of topics in various fields, including medicine, statistics, biological sciences, engineering, chemistry, nanotechnology, psychology, mathematics and physics.

NUS and Cambridge are also members of the International Alliance of Research Universities, an alliance of 10 of the world's leading research universities.
