Editorial: Return on investment
Abstract:
Greensboro's RF Micro Devices last week announced an advance that could make it a leader in solar-cell technology.
The Innovation Fund, with assets amounting to a tiny portion of North Carolina's $67 billion in state and local government employees' pension funds, borrows from ideas already implemented in about 30 states. It will "seek to invest in businesses with significant operations based in North Carolina," Cowell's office said in a news release.
Investments "may target high-growth industries that include, but are not limited to, life sciences, technology and clean energy," the release added.
That sounds like a program tailor-made for RF Micro Devices, with its potential solar-technology breakthrough; or firms getting started in the wind-energy industry; or companies that might spring out of the N.C. A&T-UNCG Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering or a research-strong UNCG School of Pharmacy.
