In a spotless new lab, UGA researchers think small

Abstract:
Your mom may think she keeps a clean house, but a special new room in the University of Georgia's Georgia BioBusiness Center off Riverbend Road makes even the most shiny-clean kitchen seem like a pit.

About three dozen UGA and visiting researchers, students and administrators staged an opening ceremony for the so-called nano-bio clean room Friday during a daylong symposium in the Biobusiness Center. The room, one of just a handful like it in the country, is designed to provide the kind of ultra-clean environment scientists and engineers need for nanotechnology - building and experimenting with films, tubes and even motors so tiny that they may measure only a molecule or two in thickness.

The bio part of the room's name comes from a UGA plan to combine nanotechnology with biological research.

"Nanotechnolgy has the potential to revolutionize not only the physical sciences but the biological sciences," declared William Dennis, head of UGA's physics and astronomy department.
