Device gets hard look
Abstract:
The Food and Drug Administration wants to learn more about the late John Kanzius' external radio-frequency device. Steven Curley, M.D., principal investigator for the Kanzius project at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, will travel to Washington, D.C., on May 12 to meet again with FDA officials.
The FDA must approve Kanzius' cancer-killing device before it can be tested on humans. It works by emitting high-powered radio waves into the body, heating and destroying cancer cells that have been targeted by nanoparticles -- tiny pieces of metal. "We just had another research paper accepted," Curley said. "It describes the work we've done with nanoparticles of different sizes and compositions. We now know what size nanoparticle will heat the fastest in the RF field."
