Spinning big profits from tiny machines
Abstract:
From dyes to effluent treatment and pollution control to cancer remediation, these nano oxides have proved their mettle in the lab. But industrial uptake is not forthcoming!
Bringing atom by atom in a precise manner to build a tiny machine which then starts making many other simple, desired systems to churn out units by the thousands in the matter of a few seconds.
That is the dream he has been trying to sell the world since a couple of decades. First it was taken up with much fanfare as a fantastic concept in systems engineering. But slowly, cynicism and fears of dangers crept in. Till the 'father of nanotechnology' was totally sidelined.
In India recently to sell his idea, Eric Drexler was "cheered by the enthusiasm" among industry and scientists. Speaking to this newspaper, he said that India could lead the way in molecular manufacture.
