Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause severe illness, and can lead to death. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu annually; more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and about 36,000 people die from flu. Bacterial infections can occur as co-infections with influenza or occur following influenza infection. Last year, CDC noted an increase in flu and Staphylococcus aureus (staph infection) co-infections among children who had died or were hospitalized with influenza infection.
