QD Vision Strengthens Board of Directors and Management Team
WATERTOWN, MA | Posted on February 6th, 2008
QD Vision today announced it appointed Dan Button, Ph.D., as President, Chief Executive Officer and a member of the board of directors. The company also elevated Willy Shih, Ph.D., to Chairman of the Board (non-executive) and named Edward H. Braun as a member of the board of directors.
Dr. Button has more than 20 years of experience launching and building materials-based businesses in global, high-growth markets, particularly in the display industry. He has repeatedly helped establish advanced materials technologies as industry standards by designing in new products with industry leaders such as Sony, Sharp and Toyota.
Dr. Button is leading QD Vision's drive toward commercialization of its quantum-dot materials and display technologies by forging design-in and strategic partnerships with leading global manufacturers. He was formerly a senior executive with a number of leading materials companies in the Fortune 500, including DuPont (Electronics/Asia), Corning (Displays) and Rohm and Haas, as well as in other MIT spin-offs including Boston MicroSystems and E Ink, the Massachusetts developer of electronic paper components for handheld devices. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT and a B.S. from Cornell, both in Materials Science and Engineering.
"QD Vision continues to build a team of proven business leaders to help drive the commercialization of our quantum-dot products," notes new CEO Dan Button. "Willy Shih and Ed Braun further reinforce our pool of cross-functional leaders with specific experience building businesses in QD Vision's high-growth arena of advanced materials, lighting and displays."
Dr. Shih, the new non-executive Chairman of the Board, was already a member of QD Vision's board of directors. With an extensive background in advanced materials, intellectual property and the electronics industry, he provides QD Vision with strategic and hands-on experience in guiding new technologies to market.
Dr. Shih is Senior Lecturer, Technology and Operations Management, at Harvard Business School. From 1997 through early 2005, he helped create Kodak's consumer digital business, including leadership of the Display and Components Group with businesses in CCD, CMOS, silicon sensors, OLED (organic light emitting device) display devices, and associated materials. He was also head of corporate intellectual property strategy at Kodak. Previously, Dr. Shih spent 18 years in the computer industry at IBM, at Silicon Graphics, where he led marketing of advanced systems, and at Thomson, where he led the technology group and oversaw corporate research, intellectual property and licensing.
QD Vision's new board member, Edward H. Braun, is chairman of Veeco, a leading provider of metrology and process equipment solutions used by manufacturers in the data storage, semiconductor and compound semiconductor/wireless industries. His experience includes extensive work integrating advanced LED technologies into systems and applications. He is also former chairman of SEMI, the trade association for the semiconductor and display industries, and a current member of the executive advisory council of IDEMA, the International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association.
