NanoHorizons and Piedmont Chemical Industries Announce Strategic Alliance

State College, PA | Posted on January 16th, 2008

NanoHorizons, Inc., a leader in the creation of antimicrobial performance additives, and Piedmont Chemical Industries, Inc. (Piedmont), a major supplier to the textile processing industry, have entered into an agreement to provide distinctive SmartSilver antimicrobial/moisture management additives for polyester, cotton, and nylon.

NanoHorizons will provide its SmartSilver antimicrobial products to Piedmont who will incorporate them into a unique water-based compound that can be applied to polyester, cotton, and nylon fabrics using standard finishing equipment. The new compounds will also impart moisture-management properties to the finished fabrics. Additionally, an additive for synthetic fiber extrusion will also be jointly developed. The new products, which will be developed jointly, will be marketed by Piedmont and are expected to be available in February 2008.

No other products like these are currently available to the textile market. Unlike other antimicrobial options available today, SmartSilver will not inhibit the finished fabric's wicking properties so that the Piedmont formulations will deliver permanent anti-odor benefits with fully functional moisture-management performance.

"We are very pleased to partner with Piedmont," says Dr. Dan Hayes, NanoHorizon's Director of Operations. "Their proven excellence in textile chemistry will ensure that the SmartSilver performance benefits are maximized. Plus, their world wide sales organization will guarantee that the global textile market has full access to these remarkable new products."

Emil Delgado, Vice President, COO of Piedmont Chemicals Industries I, LLC agrees that the partnership has a bright future. "The alliance with NanoHorizons will yield innovative and technically superior products for our customers. SmartSilver is the ideal product for us because it uniquely provides permanent antimicrobial protection in a way that doesn't affect a fabric's hand or appearance or impede the effectiveness of any other technical finishes that may be used."

NanoHorizon's nanotechnology expertise paired with Piedmont Chemical's textile chemistry proficiency will result in products that are easily integrated into the textile finishing process or the fiber extrusion process. Both companies provide extensive technical support to ensure effective and efficient implementation for manufacturers.

Other products incorporating SmartSilver will be rapidly developed for Piedmont's additional market segments such as plastics, coatings and automotive textiles. SmartSilver provides not only superior antimicrobial benefits in these applications but is also UV-resistant.
