Abstract:
The Utne Reader has nominated THE FUTURIST magazine, published bimonthly by the nonprofit World Future Society, ( http://www.wfs.org ) for an Independent Press Award in the category of science and technology coverage. "This is the 19th time we've had the honor of judging this unique contest, and I can say with confidence that the task has never been tougher—or more enjoyable," Utne Reader editor in chief David Schimke wrote in a letter to THE FUTURIST. "More than 1,300 periodicals circulate through our library, and [THE FUTURIST's] hard work consistently surprised, informed, challenged, and entertained us."

Over the past year, THE FUTURIST has carried articles and in-depth features on cybernetics, energy independence, neural modification, design for the world's poor, global warming's effects on Arctic shipping, the hybrid car market, smart fabrics and intelligent textiles, running computers on DNA, use of fMRI imaging in the classroom, legislating nanotechnology, the breakthrough health benefits of cocoa, the future of the written word, and the existential risks of twenty-first century, among many other future-related topics.
The November-December issue of THE FUTURIST, on newsstands now, features a special report entitled Outlook 2008, detailing all of the magazine's most significant findings over the course of the previous year. The current issue also showcases the writings of Harper's editor Lewis Lapham and Vanity Fair editor Cullen Murphy, among others.
