Armor experts say lightweight material would cover more of officers' chests.
But Westrick is part of a research group, comprised of academic and commercial interests, that thinks there is an answer to the problem. They are seeking a National Institute of Justice grant to develop a lightweight, heat-resistant, better-fitting vest material that would provide both police and military personnel more protection in their sides.
Researchers won't reveal much about their concept, other than to say it would employ cutting-edge nanotechnology, the emerging science that promises revolutionary advances in everything from medicine to consumer products.
