Digital Cinema Pioneer Harry Mathias Joins Panorama Entertainment Systems

LOS ANGELES, CA | Posted on March 12th, 2007

Panorama Entertainment Systems, the division of Panorama Labs applying magneto-photonic crystal technology in the entertainment industry, announced today that Harry Mathias has joined as vice president of research and development. He will be responsible for leading the effort to apply Panorama Labs' revolutionary nanotechnology to produce the first magneto-photonic digital cinema projector with resolutions of 4K and higher.

"As a longtime supporter of digital cinema technology, I'm really looking forward to helping Panorama Labs develop their groundbreaking magneto-photonic technology," said Mathias. "I'm also excited to be a part of a revolutionary technology that will have tremendous impact in delivering the best possible theater experience."

Mathias brings an impressive digital cinema background to Panorama Labs. Currently, he heads DCMP Consulting Inc., a consulting company with expertise in both digital cinema and motion picture technology. Prior to that, he served as the director of digital cinema technology for NEC's Digital Cinema Division, where besides being the founding technology strategist, he co-managed its business strategy.

Previous to NEC, Mathias was the director of digital cinema at Barco Digital Cinema in North America. There, he was responsible for leading his team in creating industry alliances, managing the dealer network, and all corporate, strategic, technology and marketing decisions in the areas of cinema and digital cinema.

Before joining Barco, Mathias was the worldwide director of motion picture technology and head of west coast operations for Schneider Optics, where he managed digital cinema market development, and the cinema lenses and motion picture camera filters divisions.

"Harry's deep understanding of the industry and the technology will help us as we continue our push to promoting the highest quality, most cost effective, and most robust digital cinema projection technology," said Sutherland Ellwood, chief strategic officer of Panorama Labs.

Mathias is the key inventor or sole inventor of four digital cinema patents, he is a founding member of SMPTE DC-28 the digital cinema standards committee, and he was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Cinema Technology Association for two terms. Mathias is also author or contributing author of several cinema technology books, has taught classes at UCLA, USC, Stanford, American University, San Francisco State University, and the American Film Institute.

"Panorama Labs' exclusive and unique magneto-photonic imaging system is at the very cutting edge of the latest thinking in our nanotechnology labs. It will result in a digital projection technology that is bright and sharp enough for the very largest cinema screens, stable enough to produce unvarying color images of the highest quality. It is very exciting to work in this area of pioneering invention," said Mathias.

While exclusively committed to Panorama Entertainment Systems in areas of digital projector and imager design, Mathias will also continue to investigate other areas of research interest through his own company DCMP Consulting Inc.
