Abstract:
Nanotechnology was the fastest growing science last year. Among its outputs were:

• The graphene, a flat layer of carbon atoms bonded together into the hexagonal pattern of graphite. The grapheme has some surprising properties: the mass of electrons in it is zero and it obeys a version of Einstein's relativity rather than Newton's laws of motion.

• Diamond nanorods, discovered by Natalia Dubro­vinskaia of the University of Bayreuth in Germany, are a dense form of carbon that's harder than diamond.
