Buckyball toxicity linked to surface modification

Earlier this year scientists found that buckyballs, or C60 molecules, caused brain damage in fish. Now a team from Rice University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, US, has found that the toxicity of buckyballs to human cells depends strongly on whether any molecules are attached to the buckyball surface.
