Abstract:
Paper coated with silver nanoparticles has different commercial applications in various industries; therefore the Iranian researchers studied the antibacterial effects of papers coated with silver nanoparticles.
Coating of silver nanoparticles on paper was studied in this research through green chemistry methods in a safe and immune manner.
A biological method has been used in this research to synthesize and coat nanoparticles on paper. To this end, silver nanoparticles were produced and coated on paper by using Escherichia coli bacteria. The biological coating is very important from environmental point of view because no chemicals have been used in its production.
It is very expensive to synthesize nanoparticles through chemical methods in comparison with other methods due to the need for devices. However, it is sometimes very difficult to obtain homogenous distribution in particles. In biosynthesis methods, nanoparticles can be produced at appropriate size distributions, and no toxic chemicals are used during the synthesis. The production of silver nanoparticles through biological methods, including using plants, algae, fungi and bacteria, have recently attracted the attention of researchers.
Results of the research show that the coated paper has high potential to be used as an antibacterial source in the packaging of foodstuff in order to increase their lifetime.
One of the researchers believes that it is possible to use biological methods to coat nanoparticles on other materials such as membranes, filters, … given the results of this research.
Results of the research have been published in IET Nanobiotechnol. vol 8, issue 4, 2013, pp. 263-266.
