Production of Anticancer Drug from Nanofibers in Iran

Tehran, Iran | Posted on November 28th, 2014

Biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic polymers have been used in the production of the nanodrug and the drug successfully passed the laboratorial tests.

The main objective of the research was to design and produce a nanodrug with the abovementioned characteristics. To this end, nanofibrous scaffold containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes has been introduced as the drug carrier.

According to the results, the use of nanofibrous scaffold containing doxorubicin anticancer drug improves the therapeutic effect of the medicine and reduces the toxicity.

Release of the drug lasts for more than 30 days in the produced drug. The drug also maintains its non-toxicity for 72 hours. Electrospinning process has been used for the production of the nanodrug. The amount and rate of release have been tested at laboratorial conditions on lung cancer cells.

According to the researchers, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were firstly produced to synthesis the drug. Then, carbon nanotubes were loaded and the drug was combined with poly (lactic acid)/polyethylene glycol solution.

As a result, composite nanofibers of poly (lactic acid)/polyethylene glycol/multi-walled carbon nanotubes containing doxorubicin anticancer drug was produced in the end. The amount of loading and release of the drug from the produced composite nanofibers were studied in a 60-day period. Finally, the related tests were carried out at laboratorial conditions by making connection between nanofibers and A549 lung cancer cells.

Results of the research have been published in Journal of Applied Polymer Science, vol. 132, issue 3, 2014, pp. 41286-1 to 41286-9.
