Abstract:
Iranian materials engineering researchers synthesized nanopigments with high reflection ability through a cost-effective method.
The research was carried out in line with the application of nanopigments in the production of white thermal controlling paint in satellites. The presented method is simple, cost-effective and highly efficient.
Nowadays, Zinc oxide nanoparticles have numerous applications in various industries. Paint manufacturing is one of the most important industries in which zinc oxide nanoparticles are widely used. In this research, efforts have been made to produce zinc oxide nanoparticles with very appropriate particle size, homogenous structure and high purity. The aim of the research was to obtain the maximum amount of light reflection in the nanoparticles.
The most important application of zinc oxide pigments is in white thermal controlling paint on the external surfaces of satellites and other protective coatings. White thermal controlling paints control the amount of heat received from the sun and heat emission into the space by using their specific optical and thermal properties, in a way that the temperature of the system always stays under 100°C.
In this research, a new and appropriate structure of zinc oxide pigments was introduced as a replacement for the old zinc oxide. This structure has less solar adsorption but higher reflection in comparison with the usual samples used in the satellites.
Zinc oxide nanopigments have been produced through hydrothermal method in this research. Taking into consideration the low price of the raw material and devices needed in the proposed method, the commercialization of the project is possible with very low investment.
In addition to paint production industries, the product can be used in ultraviolet sorbents, optical devices, gas sensors, photocatalysts, transparent conductive coatings and solar cells.
Results of the research have been published in Ceramics International, vol. 40, issue 2, 2014, pp. 11262-11268.
