Abstract:
Iranian researchers from Isfahan University of Medical Sciences studied the effects of using nanocarriers in the treatment of intra cellular infections.
Better effectiveness and performance of the drug entrapped in the proposed nanocarrier system in comparison with the free drug in the sample is among the achievements of this research.
This research studies the use of nanostructured drug delivery systems to increase the effectiveness and performance of an antibacterial drug against intra cellular infection. The aim of the research was to produce nano niosomes containing ciprofloxacin for the treatment of cellular infections. Ciprofloxacin is an antibacterial drug used in forms of oral, injection (within venous) and locally (in the eye) due to its healing properties.
The size of the nanocarrier has been reported between 160 and 600 nm. Results of the research show that niosome nanocarrier can be used as an appropriate drug delivery system with high performance and safety against intra cellular infections. However, the composition of the ingredients and the size of particles have significant effect on the effectiveness of the drug.
In complementary studies, the nanocarrier was produced through film hydration method and the size of the particles was reduced through ultrasonic method. Chemical and physical properties of the produced formulations were characterized, including the study of the ability to create niosome, determination of drug entrapping percentage, studying the particle size distribution of vesicles, and the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration of the free and entrapped drug against staphylococcus aureous bacterium. In the next stage, the chosen formulations were used for intra cellular drug delivery in the standard model of cellular cultivation (Balb/c mice macrophages, J774 cells) to disinfect the intra cellular infection of staphylococcus aureous bacterium.
The research group is currently studying the applications of nanoniosomes for carrying other drugs, including anticancer ones.
Results of the research have been published in Journal of Nanoparticle Research, vol. 15, issue 4, 2013, pp. 1-14.
