NICEATM Seeks Alternative Methods for Acute Inhalation Toxicity

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods (NICEATM) published a Federal Register notice on June 19, 2014, requesting available data and information on devices and/or technologies currently used for identifying potential inhalation hazards. See http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/?objectid=863AF324-EEC7-9C0E-66E292AA15B9D7AF According to NICEATM, it will use submitted information "to determine the technical requirements for developing effective inhalation toxicity tools to assess potential chemical or nanomaterial hazards without using animals." NICEATM requests that respondents provide information on any activities relevant to the development and/or validation of alternatives to in vivo inhalation toxicity test methods currently required by regulatory agencies. NICEATM states that this could include submission of substance-specific data derived from non-animal tests to identify acute inhalation hazard potential. If available, NICEATM requests corresponding in vivo data for these substances, "including data from any ethical human or animal studies or accidental human exposures." Submissions are due July 18, 2014.
