Abstract:
Taiwan Nano 2009 is the 7th annual Taiwan Nano 200X, hosting International Exhibition, APEC Nanoproduct Measurement Forum, Asian Symposium Nanoimprint Lithography, 2009 Global Regulation of Bionanotechnology Industry Conference. Nano Mark Products for household applications and Nano imprint Lithography are the two main themes of this event and nanotech education exhibit organized by Nanotechnology Human Resource Development Program (NHRD) is a BIG feature of Taiwan Nano 2009. The exhibits of household applications of nanotechnology are more popular in this event than other nanotech events we have been.

Household Applications of Nanotechnology in Taiwan Highlights on Taiwan Nano 2009 held on 7 - 9 October 2009

Taiwan Nano 2009 held in October 7 - 9, 2009 (see Fig.1) at the Taipei World Trade Center attracts 64 companies and agencies occupying 114 booths to present Taiwan nanotech R&D and commercialization, and education. This is the 7th annual Taiwan Nano 200X, and it hosts International Exhibition, APEC Nanoproduct Measurement Forum, Asian Symposium Nanoimprint Lithography, and 2009 Global Regulation of Bionanotechnology Industry Conference. This main event organizer is the Office of National Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Program. The Taiwan National Science and Technology Program for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology was initiated in 2003 and aims to achieve academic excellence in basic research and accelerate nanotechnology commercialization. The program has entered Phase II this year. Other organizers of Taiwan Nano 2009 include: Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Academia Sinica, Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry Technology and Development Center, Taipei Computer Association (TCA), and Taiwan Nanotechnology Industry Development Association (TANIDA). Taiwan Nano 2009 Exhibition consists of 4 exhibitive sections: nanomark theme hall, national program theme hall, nano imprint lithography hall and nanotech industry area.

Taiwan is known for its flexibility and manufacturing power to convert ideas into products. The aggressive entrepreneurship and innovative environment makes Taiwan a good place to incubate new nano-enabled products. The pragmatic Taiwanese industries showcased household applications of nanotechnology at this exhibition which makes it unique compared with other events we attended elsewhere. In order to further encourage the domestic manufacturers to develop prominent nano products and promote consumers' acceptance of nano products, Nano Mark Certification System was created in 2004 by Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) and now managed by ITRI. The review key points for nano mark products consist of the nano property (<100nm) and functionality, improved or enhanced functionality (most nanomark products shows 70% ~ 90% improvement) even after 100 cycles of repeating use. Nano Life House (see Fig.2) at Taiwan Nano 2009 exhibits 13 nano mark household products categorized as anti-bacterial, anti-smudgy, air-purification and anti-abrasive. The photocatalytic effect of nanosized TiO2 and anti-bacterial effect of nanosized silver ions have been broadly applied to the household nano products.
1. Anti-bacterial: photocatalytic anti-bacterial ceramic tiles from Champion Building Materials Co.Ltd., photocatalytic anti-bacterial light tubes from China Electric MFG. Corporation, nano Ag anti-bacteria marble from Sunny Win Light Ray Technology Co. Ltd. and nano silver anti-bacterial household textile from Everest Textile Co. Ltd., Long Qiang Nano Technology Co. Ltd. and ABA Nano-Tech Company.
2. Anti-smudgy: HCG anti-smudgy sanitary facilities from Hocheng Co. Ltd. and anti-smudgy ceramic tile from ROMA Ceramic Tile Enterprise Co. Ltd.
3. Air-purification and filtration: photocatalytic air purifier and air filtration from Vital Air Co. Ltd and photocatalytic deodorized paints from Hsin Mei Hua Paint Factory Co. Ltd., Tatung Fine Chemicals Co. Ltd and Kinglin Technical Industrial Co. Ltd.
4. Anti-abrasive: anti-abrasive PU synthetic leathers from NeoGila Co. Ltd, anti-abrasive PU resins from Headway Group and anti-abrasive metal buckles from NANMAT Co. Ltd.
Note that nanomark is not compulsory scheme, companies wish to obtain the nanomark would voluntarily apply to be certified. As a result, nanomark certified products benefit from the schemes as nano branding.

In addition to the nano mark products displayed in the Nano Life House Pavilion, many other companies also came to Taiwan Nano 2009 exhibition to maximize the visibility of their innovative household and electronic products using nano materials or nanotechnology. For example, PurpleCow Nano Carbon Particles Technology Corp. promotes their nano thermal glue, nano carbon artificial skin and nano collagen. They believe that their nano thermal glue can transfer heat away from the heat source to the heat sink at least 40% more efficiently and their nano collagen can be directly absorbed by the skin to revitalize and grow youthful skin cells. Top Nano Technology Co. Ltd. introduces their innovative wine aerator-nano flagons and nano tea pots with a thin Au catalyst film coated on the inner wall to improve the smell and taste of wine or tea in a very short time (3 seconds). On the contrary to the blooming market for the household applications of nano technology in Taiwan, we can say that its nanotech applications on the electronics and instruments are still far from its Asia competitors such as Korea and Japan. Nevertheless, Nanocyl Taiwan distributor says their Carbon Nanotube (CNT) products marketing started to warm up since 2009 and also XinNano showcases their prototyped CNT-based products including the CNT transparent conductive thin films for the applications on touch screen, flexible display and signboard, CNT based dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) for the building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) applications, as well as the CNT based field emission cathodes for x-ray applications.

Nano imprint is another significant theme in the Taiwan Nano 2009. In addition to set up the nano imprint hall for displaying the latest research achievements by posters from domestic and oversea researchers, ITRI also organizes the 2nd Asia Symposium on Nano Imprint Lithography (ASNIL 2009) on 7-8 October 2009 at level 2, TWTC. ASNIL 2009 provides researchers and engineers with opportunities to share research activities, information, and achievements in Nano Imprint Lithography. The plenary and invited talks are given by distinguished scientists from Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, covering the updated state-of-the-art development in the fields of ultra-thin PDMS coating toward anti-adhesion, photo-curable resins and their evaluation methods for UV nanoimprint, nanoimprint systems for DTM-HDD, 3-D hierarchical structure nanoimprint using HSQ and SOG as well as applications and high throughput of nanoimprint lithography.

Nanotech education exhibit organized by Nanotechnology Human Resource Development Program (NHRD) is a BIG feature of Taiwan Nano 2009. It is a key element of the National Science and Technology Program for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology launched in 2003. Taiwan Nano 2009 Exhibition was specially opened to the primary and high school students on the last two days. NHRD theme hall designed many inspiring nanotech-related videos, games and gifts for the visiting teenagers to know about the magic nano world. Public education in nanotech has been shown increasing importance in Asia. Nano Korea 2009 on August also highlighted education and it included a special session to give the public an education on where's nanotechnology going now in our daily life. Furthermore, during Taiwan Nano2009, we witnessed that textbooks, education videos as well as demo appliance at NHRD theme hall clearly indicates that nanotechnology education and human resource development in Taiwan is at the kindergarten level.
